The car itself is fairly nondescript. Its paint is chipping in the corners and the passenger’s side window leaks and the horn stopped working a year ago and once I ran the tires so bald, the tire man was shocked I hadn’t yet died in a fiery accident. But at least once a week — once a week for the past five years, my old metal friend would anthropomorphize. It’d remind me the ways in which my ex and I failed, how much his sister hates me, and the way the two of them still describe me. Liar, cheater, quitter. I kept it for longer than I should have; I am a Taurus and I cling to the familiar, even when it hurts. Stab me in the heart, I am yours forever. Casting the car aside was my spiritual Stonewall.
