The center of Tropical Storm Bertha was passing near the northern end of Martinique on this late Friday afternoon, about 405 miles southeast of San Juan. Maximum sustained winds are 50 mph, and little change in the strength is expected during the next 48 hours. Bertha is expected to move into the northeastern Caribbean Sea this evening, pass near Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Saturday, near or over the eastern Dominican Republic on Saturday Night, and approach the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands on Sunday. New tropical storm watches have been issued. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches, with isolated amounts up to 6 inches, are expected across portions of the Leeward Islands and the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. Rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated amounts of 10 inches, are possible across Puerto Rico - with the heaviest totals occurring on the southern portion of the island.
