The central government has accepted the proposal for Guwahati Metro Rail Project in Assam. The entire project would cost Rs 14,000 crore. Earlier in March, the project was estimated at Rs 1,800 crore during the Assam Assembly Budget Sessions for the year 2013-14. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told the media on Thursday that the central government had sanctioned an amount of Rs.25 crore for the feasibility study and the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR). According to the project plan, the first phase of the project will cover a distance of 65 km in Guwahati, connecting the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport to Narengi in the city and the second phase of the project will cover the stretch between Paltan Bazar to Khanapara area of the city, while the third will cover a stretch between Khanapara area to Jalukbari area of the city. When asked for the project completing duration, “It might take us five to six years to study the feasibility of the project and prepare the DPR. In Assam, it could take longer time as we have less working days due to the rain”, the congress ruled state chief minister said. He added that his government has been also working to develop a river transport system in and around the state and set up small townships around Guwahati to lessen the inflow of people into the city and they have sought the help of an Ahmedabad-based institute of urban planning in this regard.
