The central image of this poster is comprised of two photographs by Herb Greene one of Jefferson Airplane, and the other of the Grateful Dead. Although it is not a really one of the best visual pieces in the series of 289 posters, it is indeed one of the toughest Bill Graham posters to acquire and because of the mystery surrounding it, one of the most expensive as well. Several unsubstantiated stories circulate explaining the scarcity of this Poster From The Past. One of them is that the semi truck that left from San Francisco headed to Toronto crashed and burnt on the way near Chicago destroying the equipment and posters, leaving only a small amount of the posters left in SF at Bill Grahams offices. Another theory is that they were seized by Canadian Customs pursuant to a requirement that advertising material such as this had to be printed in Canada. A similar problem occurred when Russ Gibb (of Grande Ballroom fame) tried to bring posters for a Toronto concert into Canada from Michigan. Perhaps these posters and cards were destroyed, or perhaps to this day they are sitting in a large warehouse similar to the one in the last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark....... Who knows? And so it was on this day in July, 47 years ago back in 1967, that The Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and Luke and The Apostles, were appearing for their beginning of six nights of concerts at the OKeefe Center, in Toronto, Canada. Light show by Jerry Abrams Headlights which always were GREAT! This rock poster is BG number #74 and was created by rock artist James Gardner and was the only poster he did for Bill Graham. There were two authorized printings of this poster and one pirate printing done in 1988. Share this Rare Bird with a friend. Yep!, another Approved by Professor Poster
