The chart in the previous post is humorous but pretty spot on when it comes to when a horse needs to be blanketed. Most people have healthy strong horses that can survive even the wettest, coldest of winters without shelter and a blanket (although miserably). The chart even says, if your horse is old or thin it needs a blanket, they added or a wuss to be funny. We take horses that are in poor health and yes, they need to be blanketed. This is a video I took of Jazzy when she was still in the rehab phase. It was high 50s that day and the other horses were comfortably grazing in the rain but it was obviously taking a toll on her. We also blanket our older, hard to keep weight on horses. Before I started rescuing horses, we bought a horse, Hershey that was in her 20s. Her first winter she quickly dropped weight. I called my vet and he said add corn oil and alfalfa to her feed and blanket her. Shes close to 30 now and weve never had any problem since then keeping weight on her (and now we only feed her senior and she does fine). Every horse is different but ALL horses appreciate shelter when its freezing and wet outside, especially when its a cold spell that lasts for days. They make great turn out blankets in medium weight that helps keep them comfortable for those few times in the deep south that we have a freeze. https://youtube/watch?v=meyFKiNegjg&list=UUy0vzeAKFj-G-q_dHwpF9Vw
