The city of Las Vegas is gearing up for what is likely to be an eventful New Years. For one thing, were expecting the usual 340,000 tourists to descend on the city. Many of them are already here. Many more arrive tonight. Even the non-gaming financial boost theyre expected to provide hovers around $225,000,000. So expect a party, and if youre in a business that benefits from tourism, get staffed up. Of course this means a big spike in traffic, in accidents, and in impaired driving. The police will all be working New Years Eve, but the city cant stop every bad decision made that night. The flood of visitors currently streaming in from California is likely to cause traffic jams and collisions, and the partying happening this week is very likely to cause tragedies. Wednesday evening will be a good time to stay off the road if you have the option. But a new complication has currently a 70% chance of appearing: Snow. Las Vegas is moderately well-equipped to handle snow; the city keeps six snowplows, 40 tons of Ice Slicer, and staff ready to go, in addition to more snowplows and help from the surrounding area if need be. But we dont see snow that often here. Snow and ice always raise the risk of driving, and if dangerous weather corresponds with a dangerous celebration this year, city services will be taxed to the limit. Remember all this as you pursue your holiday plans, and make an effort to drive sober and minimally. Lets be safe this week, and all have a great end to the holiday season. If you have been injured in an accident, were there for you: (702) 382-0000.
