The city of West Carrollton is a recent beneficiary of the Operation 1000 Cherry Trees project. In mid-December, the parks and recreation department staff planted ten trees in the median on Dixie Drive near the Exit 47 interchange. The trees were planted thanks to an initiative by a local businessman Alex Hara. He started the project after the March 11, 2011, earthquake and subsequent tsunami in his native Japan, as way to recognize the generous donations and relief actions of the United States. “These trees will really complement the recent gateway improvements made at the city’s new interchange” said Christian Mattingly, parks and recreation director. “We appreciate the generous donation,” he said. Mattingly said the new trees also help to offset the loss of many other ash trees in the community which had to be cut down due to the emerald ash borer infestation. Other trees have been planted through the Operation 1000 Cherry Trees Project at the Carillon Historical Park in Dayton and at the US Air Force Museum and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
