The closeness of the A grade women’s competition was evident last Friday night with both matches played with a grand final like feel. Cubs narrowly defeated Magpies 1-0 with an Illie Hewitt goal the only difference between the two sides. A highlight of the match was the performance of both young goal-keepers, Tash Tanks and Maddy Tanswell. Both girls made some brilliant saves during the game and played at a standard well beyond their years. Best and Fairest: Cubs – Jess Ross, Tash Tanks, Mandy Westcott. Magpies – Wendy Rix, Cherie Johnstone, Maddy Tanswell. Middleton Coachman showed that they are definite grand final contenders after they came from 2-0 behind to win their match against Cellar Crows 3-2. In an exciting match, Cass Hodges and Fiona Lovett scored early in the match to give Cellars a comfortable 2-0 lead. Middleton worked their way back into the match with their younger players leading the way and scored three consecutive goals through Tracie Sams (2) and India Draper. In a losing side, Louise Hawken was outstanding gaining maximum best and fairest points. Best and Fairest: Middleton – Niamh Dixon, India Draper, Paige Hay. Cellars – Louise Hawken. In the B grade men’s competition Cellar Crows defeated Magpies Black 3-1. Craig Kelly was on fire in front of the net scoring a hat-trick of goals for Cellars with Will Cassell the lone goal-scorer for Magpies. Best and Fairest: Cellars – Craig Kelly, Kobi Runcel-Fitzsummons, Rodney Ross. Magpies – Will Cassell, Mitch Miles. In a close, entertaining match Middleton edged out Rovers Gorillas 2-1. Scott Allen scored a double for Middleton with Brad Simpson scoring for Rovers. Luke Hodges had his ever-consistent game for Middleton. Best and Fairest: Middleton – Luke Hodges. Rovers – Jordan Clark, Brad Simpson, Cooper Wakeman. Magpies White were too strong for Magpies Academy winning 3-0. Josh Kearney put in a player of the match performance scoring two goals and picking up maximum umpire points. Jarod Carty also scored for White. Best and Fairest: White – Josh Kearney, Will Searl, Riley Swan. Academy – Glenn Sloane. In the B grade women’s competition Middleton Maroon were strong in their 3-0 defeat of Cellar Crows Aqua. The goals were shared between Michelle Melhuish, Olivia Noakes and Cherie Simpson. Young Gabbie Noakes had her usual strong game for Maroon. Best and Fairest: Maroon – Gabbie Noakes. Cellars – Jodie Dietch, Katie Nash, Carly Hoy, Emily Rogers. Magpies and Cellar Crows Black played out a scoreless draw. The Rice sisters were stand-out performers for Magpies showing they are up and coming talents in the Parkes Hockey competition. Best and Fairest: Magpies – Meg Rice, Emma Rice, Kate Rice. Cellars – Michelle Skinner, Jane McGlashan, Kerrie Kennedy. Middleton Pink defeated fellow club-mates Middleton Eagles 3-0. Sue McGrath scored twice and Amy Draper once for Pink in their victory. Young Peta Fagan had a superb match for the winning team. Best and Fairest: Pink – Peta Fagan, Janelle Ross, Sue McGrath. Eagles – Katie Townsend, Clodagh O’Brien. Rovers defeated Marist 3-0 in the final match of the weekend. Tammy Tanks continues to be in fine form in front of goals scoring a hat-trick for Rovers. Best and Fairest: Rovers – Monique Labuschagne, Emily Green, Tammy Tanks. Marist – Sara Scott, Teigan Miles, Eloise Anderson. There were no game cards available for the A grade men’s games this weekend.
