The community of College Park has seen various types of crime over the past thirty days. College Park has had a total of 21 crimes occur from August 6th to September 6th. College Park is the community that I grew up in, getting to know a lot of those who live within the area. I am concerned how the neighborhood has changed drastically over the years. It’s not uncommon for neighborhoods to fall into the “broken window” theory. This is where one residence has become dilapidated and fallen into disrepair. Soon, another will do the same and so on and so on. This is the same thing that can occur when the criminal element moves into the area. Once that element is established it will spread within the community bringing more and more of the negative activity around our homes. The Sheriff’s office along with the community need to band together and remove the criminal element to begin the repair of the “windows”. During this time frame, there have been several assaults, drug violations and thefts within the community. There have also been other crimes in the community which range from vandalism to threats. This community is another example of where I would like to implement an awareness program to get information to residents in the area of what crime is occurring on a more real time. This could be done by making contact with the residents who are at home and/ or by door hangers upon their return. This would increase awareness among residents that a crime had occurred, therefore, heightening their awareness of past or future suspicious vehicles or individuals in the area. We could also apply a follow up with the victim and neighbors on some cases, such as the thefts, that have occurred to assist detectives with increasing the solvability of the case. The department would also benefit by looking at assaults verses drug violations to see if there is any connection and possibly following up with a larger scale narcotic investigation to rid the community of drug dealers who have established a criminal element in the area. These ideas are all part of actively analyzing neighborhoods and effectively positioning deputies to assist the community in ridding crime. Communication is a huge collaboration between the citizens who live in the area and the deputies who work the area. It is important for the community and the Sheriff’s Department to work together in solving crime and other problems that have been occurring.
