The computer scientists, engineers, and biochemists had accomplished what was once thought to be the impossible. It was a simple procedure. Remove the broken spine, insert a cybernetic replacement, and program it to interact with the nervous system and brain. Science had won the day. Albert was the proof. He awakened from the surgery a new man. He was a man with hope, a man with a future, a man no longer a slave to his condition. After weeks of recovery, testing, and analysis, Albert was free to go. As he said goodbye, he was presented with his old wheelchair. He wanted it as a reminder of his former self. The machine disagreed and Albert was forced to obey.
