The connection between math and substance abuse, I get. But between math and the real world?!?! Id never considered *that* before! Theres a reason she received the genius grant! Seriously, my mathematical hero the Fields Medalist Alexander Grothendieck very nearly didnt pursue mathematics as a profession. He was told in elementary school that all the math there was had already been discovered. Not too many years later, he himself put the lie to that by revolutionizing wide swaths of the subject. Math, like every other field of intellectual inquiry, is is still working to expand what we know and how certain we are that we know it. Pretty important work in this, the information age.
