The contents of this article refer to the old Russian strategy Two steps forward, one step back. One step forward is the illegitimate and criminal annexation of Crimea, the second step forward is Putins no less criminal support for terrorists and extremists in Eastern Ukraine. One step back would be the withdrawal of this support provided that the annexation of Crimea is legitimised and accepted by the West. HOWEVER - and this is important - it may be useful to remind the readers that The Independent is owned by Alexander Lebedev, a Russian oligarch and a former KGB officer (some would argue that there are no _former_ KGB officers). The only rationale behind this article is not to reveal any alleged secret plan between Merkel and Putin, but to remind of the above-mentioned Russian strategy (still on offer), as well as examining public opinion on the matter.
