The controversy over the parks/monuments being closed really got - TopicsExpress

The controversy over the parks/monuments being closed really got me thinking. They dont really serve a function within the government, so shouldnt their department be defunded/done away with? Especially since the government has set aside the land/sites for everybodys use, which reeks of socialism to me. We could sell the existing sites to private parties (maybe use the money we get for paying down the deficit, or more importantly, increasing the defense budget), the let the free market decided on when and how theyre accessed. Of course, if the parks arent subsidized by the government, it may or may not cost a more for the average citizen to utilize them, especially those that were previously free. The free market system has worked for years, though - just look at Disney, Six Flags, Kings Island, etc. If people really want to visit these parks, then theyll find the money for it. We shouldnt subsidize a national park system when history has proven that a free-market system works.
