Hurricane Ivans impact on the Gulf Coast, with Chief Meteorologist Alan Sealls. A 30 minute News 5 special program airs Monday, June 9, at 8pm. Hurricane Ivan was a long-track, major hurricane that crossed the Atlantic in 2004 and became a category 5 in the Caribbean. It arrived on our coastline on Thursday, September 16, 2004, shortly after midnight, as a high category 3. In the News 5 area, nearly a dozen people were killed. We saw record storm surge of 10 to 15 feet from south Baldwin County into the Florida Panhandle. Ivan changed the landscape. It was one of the most costly hurricanes to strike the United States with over 14 billion dollars in losses measured. For the Pensacola area, it was the most intense hurricane in a century.
