The crisis is over. Unlike the situation in NYC, at the General Theological Seminary, all talk about walking out has been forgotten when Boswell opened a 5 oz. can of tuna for us before running off to the church to cheer the runners with loud, rowdy sounds. I am sedately snoozing at my usual spot on Boswells desk, between the monitor and the keyboard. Once upon a time, there was room for me and the three younguns. Now, there is barely enough room for me, until Telly horns in and wants to use my ample caboose for a pillow. Another event which calmed the waters is that when Boswell came back, he had a juicy thought to share with me, which is relevant to the recent gatherings done by the Bethlehem Diocese, and conducted by Peter Pearson. This discovery came from Boswell quirky habit of reading old stuff, especially peripheral material, such as essays, journals, and letters. In this case, he was reading Essays of Virginia Woolf, Volume 1 1904 - 1912. The essay was entitled The Decay of Essay Writing, written in 1905. The quote is this But if you have a monster like the British public to feed, you will try to tickle its stale palate in new ways; fresh and amusing shapes must be given to the old commodities - for we really have nothing so new to say that it will not fit into one of the familiar forms. So we confine ourselves to no one literary medium: WE TRY TO BE NEW BY BEING OLD; we revive mystery plays and affect an archaic accent... Upon reading that phrase I highlighted, Boswell burst out laughing, because to his heathen mind, this is what was being offered at the Think Outside the Box colloquia. What was considered radical was simply following Jesus teachings in an earnest, dutiful manner, but far, far less strict than monastic life or some practices of Discipleship Boswell himself has encountered, in Crossroads, for example. The humor was not based on the fact that Boswell agreed with Woolf, but that she said it 110 years ago. Once more, the palace revolt is forgotten, food arrives promptly and with dignity, and ideas flow as before. Now, all we kitties have to pray for Boswell, who seems to have a knack of annoying people with his questions. Ill give him this. He is a stickler for openness, and asking difficult questions.
