The department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is one of the constituent departments of the Basic Medical Sciences at Army Medical College. The department boasts of one of the most qualified faculty in the country comprising of 3 PhDs, 2 FCPS and 2 M Phils qualified members. This department has unique and versatile role with academic programmes being conducted for both undergraduate (MBBS, BDS) and postgraduate (PhD, FCPS, M Phil) students. The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology is conducting an extensive and ever growing undergraduate teaching programme for both MBBS and BDS students, where the students are taught molecular and functional organization of cell, its sub cellular components, inter-relationship of various biomolecules, various aspects of metabolism and regulatory pathways, biochemistry basis of inherited disorders, basics of genetic engineering and their applications in modern medicine in the first two years for the MBBS students and the first one year for the BDS students. All these teaching modules are integrated with the departments of Anatomy and Physiology which is important for the better understanding of the normal body structure and function. The department follows a modular system during the academic session with an annual examination being held at the end of Ist and IInd year of MBBS studies and 1st year of BDS studies. The emphasis is on clinical based learning (CBL) to provide the medical and dental students with comprehensive insight into the biochemical basis of human disease. The department is running 3 postgraduate programmes including M.Phil, FCPS and PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. The department is especially strong in research with studies of international standing being conducted in the state of the art Centre for Research in Experimental and Applied Medicine (CREAM) laboratory which works in strong collaboration with the department. The department houses multiple core facilities including HPLC, gas chromatography, DNA sequencing, real time PCR, spectrophotometers and gel electrophoresis.
