The deputy police chief and one of his officers in Fruitland Park, Florida have resigned after an FBI investigation identified them as members of the Ku Klux Klan. Last week, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement submitted their findings to Police Chief Terry Isaacs, identifying Deputy Chief David Borst and Officer George Hunnewell as members of the KKK. According to WFTV, members of the Florida Klan have boasted about having members who are “police officers, paramedics, judges…everywhere.” Although Chief Isaacs would not comment on what organization the two cops belonged to, he told the Orlando Sentinel, “It’s a tough situation. He was my assistant. But I’ve read the report, and it’s convincing.” Chief Deputy State Attorney Ric Ridgway seemed to defend the two disgraced officials, however, saying, “It’s not a crime to be a member of the KKK, even if you are the deputy chief. It’s not a crime to be stupid. It’s not a crime to hate people. It may be despicable, it may be immoral, but it’s not a crime.” “They’re a good group of people,” Isaacs said. “The last thing I was expecting to hear in the year 2014 was for a professional law enforcement officer to be a member of a subversive organization.” Borst, 49, was also the town’s fire chief. Hunnewell had previously been demoted from corporal after he received five “letters of counseling,” suggesting he violated department standards. In 2009, another Fruitland Park officer, James Elkins, had to resign after photos of him in a Klan hood and robe surfaced on the web.
