The dredging of the One Mile harbour is firmly stuck in my memory - TopicsExpress

The dredging of the One Mile harbour is firmly stuck in my memory thanks to my brother James Gerber and sisters Sue Kallis and Kim. During August/September of 1976 the One Mile was dredged out to make the anchorage more accessible. The dredging included the area that is now where the LSC pontoon, water taxi pontoon and jetty are located. The photo below is an aerial shot before dredging. Prior to the dredging everyone had to pull the dinghys in and out with the tide so as not to get stuck ashore. Being good boating children we were all trained in this job. Well the Gerber children were all excited to arrive at the One Mile in the Christmas of 1976, we couldnt wait for mum and dad so we all jumped in the dingy, with Jim driving and headed ashore. As we approached the area that is now the boat ramp, Jim yells out, OK over you go and pull us in. Being a vunerable 6 year old (that had no concept of dredging at that age,yes I have finally gotten over it, maybe!!) over I go, doing as my big brother told me. Well I got the fright of my life, I didnt feel any mud under my feet, instead of walking on mud I found myself swimming in deep water. As my head breaks the surface all I can hear is screaming laughter coming from the dinghy. Yep they got me lol...second photo is the three culprits
