The e-mail just received from V.I Virginia Intermont College Files Injunction Following SACS Decision Virginia Intermont College (VI) announced today its plans to move forward after an August 21 hearing in which the College sought to appeal a decision by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS) to remove VI from membership. The SACS appeals committee upheld its earlier decision. Upon hearing SACS’ final decision, VI immediately filed for an injunction from the federal court in order to maintain accreditation through the legal process. Kathleen O’Brien, Chair of VI’s Board of Trustees and 1986 alumna said, “VI presented a very compelling fact-based case that supports the ‘new and verifiable information’ requirements by SACS. Even given the challenges and stresses that came with their June decision, we continue to serve and advance our core mission of academic excellence. Students continue to thrive and stakeholders continue to invest in what we do.” “Although I am disappointed with the outcome, historically SACS does not reverse its decision in an appeal,” said VI President E. Clorisa Phillips. “The Board of Trustees, the administration and I are fully committed to moving VI forward. As we chart our future, we are thankful that VI remains accredited during this process, and for our students, it’s ‘business as usual’ on campus with the start of a very exciting new semester.”
