The early days of January are days of reflection, looking back on - TopicsExpress

The early days of January are days of reflection, looking back on the year gone by and making plans for the coming year. More based on hope than reality, I have decided to give the recording studio one more year. If things dont change, I will have no choice but to close its doors to the public at the end of 2015. Why, you may well ask? Okay, the reality is this. The bigger bands and singers are recording in more established studios and the local performers are bypassing studios altogether. They dont need real instruments, they dont need arrangements, they simply download karaoke backing tracks from the internet for a few cents, download a free DAW, stick a microphone into their laptop and Bobs your uncle (a quite sterile and tuneless uncle, but your uncle nonetheless!). Heat, lighting, maintenance, equipment updates, Revenue take another huge chunk out of my meagre profits. I cant force singers/musicians to use The Croft Studio. Ive had special offers, open days, prizes of free mixed and mastered tracks and still - Im my own best customer. Rural Irish ears dont have any filters. They dont care if the backing track was made on a workstation in Osaka or on a keyboard in Moscow, Johnny sounds mighty and of course his cheap CDs sell like hot cakes. So, one more year it is. I hope that I will be back here next January telling you all that things have picked up and that I can stay open for another year but honestly, I doubt it. The support is simply not there. All the best for 2015, Francis K.
