The effects of #unemployment on mental health Unemployment is a prolonged stress generated factor which results not only in mental problems but also in psychosomatic diseases, which include both the mind (psyche) and the body (soma). The term mental health is defined as both the absence of mental illness that is psychological and psychiatric disorders. Unemployment is a permanent stress situation which requires one to adapt. An unemployed person is in a: a) Frustration situation ---- which is a consequence of his or her social, physical losses and failure, affected by the feeling of worthlessness. b) Unemployment causes symptoms of somatization, depression and anxiety. Being unemployed have a major and lasting effect on people’s satisfaction with their lives. c) Unemployment is one the few life events that can change people’s life satisfaction set point which is, the baseline level of satisfaction with life to which people tends to return after experiencing a crisis. Being employed satisfies creative urges, promotes self esteem and provides an avenue for achievement and self realization. Unemployment causes emotional responses like: • Worry • Fear • Hostility • Aggression • Sorrow • Depression • Loneliness • Anger More so unemployed people do not return to their original life satisfaction baseline even many years after they regained employment. Ecological studies show that at times of economic recession there are higher suicide rates in the population. We can therefore help curb unemployment by: Mixing education and training, promoting entrepreneurship and strengthening employment services as the key to tackling the current youth employment crisis. Integrating entrepreneurship in technical and vocational training. Therefore one key objective is to help students imagine starting their own business, which can also make technical training more attractive. Growth and development strategies should be strongly based on human capital development. Use of skills development which does not only help the country and workers overcome their impacts of the crisis but also prepare them to face the long term trends that are hitting the labor markets such as demographic and technological changes, skill mismatch issues or the changing global competition for talent. N.B The country need to have enough high profile companies built by locals to which tomorrow’s young people can look to and be motivated and inspired to venture in to business, enterprises that can operate in the global world. Inadequate skills in entrepreneurship will lead to poor enterprises, hence poor growth prospect for in the economy. The underlying reason for low participation rates of youth in entrepreneurship is lack of quality or adequate skills. The state can get involved as enabler, provider and activator to ensure incorporation of entrepreneurship training in the education system, more especially in basic education. #O4Z #youthunemployment
