The elephant overpopulation in smaller reserves requires intervention to prevent the need for culling. This seemed contradictory with the widespread poaching of elephants for their ivory. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss, over population in the smaller reserves is a real problem that is being managed by contraception. PZP, a protein produced by the the eggs of female pigs, is injected into the elephant cow. An antibody is produced by the elephant that prevents the egg from being fertilized. The drug lasts for about a year. This form of contraception was being used at Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa while I was there.
