The essay below by Mr. Bill Scher is deeply insightful, brutally honest. And the accompanying picture is near perfect. Republican after Republican had supported various mandates, at the state and federal levels, requiring insurance companies to provide coverage for birth control. But when a similar provision was included in the Democrats Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act, conservative Republicans blew a fuse. Apparently government-mandated birth control is acceptable only when an R appears behind it. When conservatives and Republicans made the whole Hobby Lobby controversy about religion, it showed that their political strategic ability is no better than their understanding of the basic principles of the Constitution they claim to love. Foolish on both counts. Yet they still clamor constantly for more support, more money, and more votes. So lets be clear: Sure, some Republicans might win here or there next month. Heck, Republicans might even win control of the Senate, at least for the time being. But in the grand contest between the socialism and government regulations that come with progressivism versus the individual freedom and responsibilities that come with constitutional government -- a contest thats now over a hundred years old -- the only real question is: Will the former continue to grow, and will the latter die off altogether, quickly or slowly? Democrats represent the fast track. Republicans represent the slow one. The choice is ours. Perhaps this means we are all progressives now?
