The family came to Canada as visitors, hoping to stay for a better life for Qyzra. They repeatedly sought permanent residency but never got it. The family knew they knew they were running out of options, said friend Stan Jacob, who drove them to many appointments. Jacob said he’s been struggling to understand why anyone in the family would kill, but added their life here was a constant strain. Like others, he blames the uncertain lives they lived waiting to learn if they could stay in Canada. “In 70 years I’ve never been ashamed of my country, and I’m ashamed of what we did to him and his family and that little girl,” said Jacob. “Fifteen years of waiting for them to drop the door on you has to have an effect . . . there’s got to be a statute of limitations. Jacob said he’s haunted by Qyzra’s dazzling smile. “When that kid smiled, your heart melted.”
