The famous Tanglewood family in the amount of US$141 million has filed a lawsuit against the Government of Anguilla. The case is scheduled to be heard on the 18th November 2013. The case revolves around the 10 acres of land the AUF administration took from the family for the airport project, the family is claiming that the land taken for the Airport ruined their project. The Government of Anguilla is now asked to pay for the land and damages. Interestingly this very project received all the duty free perks that investment projects on Anguilla receive and until recently it owed the Government of Anguilla US$14 million in Stamp Duty on the land transfers. Under advice form the very landowners (asking the Government not to link monies owed by the project to monies owed to the Government of Anguilla) the present administration forgave payment on the entire sum only to now be taken to court. It is felt the amount of the stamp duty was high because the land was over valued, however it appears that the over valuation was intended to inflate the amount of money the Government would eventually owe for the land taken for the airport project.
