The father knew that there was more at stake than possessions. His son was lost, and the only way to get him back was to give him those things that come and go, the things the son thought he needed. The son thought he needed money, but he needed his father. The father gave him what he wanted so the son could gain what he really needed. If you have grown children at home who don’t work, who don’t follow the rules, who want to party all night long, who disrespect you, help them pack. The father did nothing but wait for God to do what He said He would do. “Train up a child in the way he should go …” Pray and wait for God to move. God will work on your child. The father did not find the son. God put His hands on the son, woke him up and the son came home. When the son came home, the father showed compassion, not criticism and blame. When we were lost, God met us with His grace and extended His mercy to us. Things come and go, but if God gave you a child, cherish that child. The child is your inheritance. – ER Pierson, in “Lessons from a Father” Luke 15:11-24
