The film “FRONTRUNNERS: NIIGAANIBATOWAAD” is touring Southern Ontario with a number of the runners from the 1967 Pan Am Games torch relay. Don’t miss a screening near you! FrontRunners tells the story of 10 young Aboriginal men chosen to carry the Pan American Games torch from St. Paul, Minnesota to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1967. When they arrived at the stadium, however, a non-Aboriginal runner was given the honour of carrying the torch inside. Nine of the Aboriginal men were residential school students, and the film traces their journey of suffering and reflection. The United Church of Canada provided strong support to the “Niigaanibatowaad: Frontrunners” story as a dramatic presentation and, in 2007, contributed funding to the production of a television film and DVD versions. Interest and support has also come from regional and congregational levels of the church. In 2008, an ecumenical study guide was created by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal writers to accompany the award-winning Canadian film to assist viewers in exploring issues of racism, residential schools, and healing. The film and study guide remain a powerful and moving educational resource.
