The final hike in our #GetHiking! North Carolina Classic Hikes - TopicsExpress

The final hike in our #GetHiking! North Carolina Classic Hikes series: a New Year’s Day 2016 climb of Mount Mitchell. Odds are that if you’ve stood atop Mount Mitchell you achieved the summit of the highest peak east of the Black Hills via the popular Snack Bar Route — the trail linking the mountaintop concession area with the 6,684-foot summit via about 100 yards of pavement (elevation gain: maybe 50 feet). On this climb, however, our GetHiking! group start from the Black Mountain campground and take the 5.5-mile Mount Mitchell Trail (part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail) to the top (elevation gain: about 3,600 feet). A great way to cap a great year of hiking North Carolina’s classic hiking trails.
