The final interview I gave before returning to my biggest love, music, was for this segment of a BBC “Panorama” documentary “The Billion Dollar Don” – hosted by Tom Mangold. It’s 1998, the mane is getting wilder, and we’re talking about Semion Mogilevich: youtube/watch?v=0aeLjcRSnr4 In the late 1990s, Mogilevich was labelled the most dangerous mobster on the planet, and to this day he remains on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list: fbi.gov/wanted/topten/semion-mogilevich/view The jovial investigator seen throughout the program, Robert Levinson, who retired from the FBI in 1998, was taken hostage on March 9, 2007, while visiting Kish Island, Iran and is today the longest held hostage in American history. It’s an ongoing tragedy with no progress apparent. The four show segments are: youtube/watch?v=UDkIYu3UqrM – Part 1 youtube/watch?v=c62Rzg3wXy8 – Part 2 youtube/watch?v=0aeLjcRSnr4 – Part 3 youtube/watch?v=qfDzMQF4Gzw – Part 4 On a more joyous note – the musical combo witnessed in this BBC doc, performing a residency at Toronto’s Cameron House, is Kevin Quain and the Mad Bastards – inimitable masters of garage jazz cabaret noir. I was turned onto this band by another legend of Canadian music – Ralph “Dig That Crazy Bongo Beat” Alfonso.
