The final post has lists of products that do and those that dont contain palm oil, an important list of alternative names by which palm oil is known and 2 mobile apps to tell you whether a product contains palm oil. PALM OIL IS KILLING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF INDIGENOUS ANIMALS (Part Three) Palm oil has a number of advantages over other oils, which makes it a popular ingredient: It has a natural preservative effect which extends the shelf life of food products. It is cheaper than other oils, and is naturally cholesterol free. It maintains its properties even under high temperatures. It is the highest-yielding vegetable oil crop, which makes it very efficient. It needs less than half the land required by other crops to produce the same amount of oil. This makes palm oil the least expensive vegetable oil in the world. In total, 50 million tons of palm oil is produced annually, supplying over 30% of the world’s vegetable oil production. India, China, Indonesia and Europe are the main consumers of palm oil. It is found in approximately 40-50% of household products in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia and England. Palm oil is present in a wide variety of products, including: margarine, cereals, peanut butter, crisps, baked goods, confectionery, chocolate, biscuits, ice cream, pre-battered fish and chicken, soap, shampoo, cosmetics, cleaning agents, washing detergents and toothpaste. Deforestation for palm oil production also contributes significantly to climate change. The removal of the native forests often involves the burning of invaluable timber and remaining forest undergrowth, emitting immense quantities of smoke into the atmosphere and making Indonesia the third highest greenhouse gas emitter in the world. The palm oil industry is also linked to major human rights violations, including child labour in remote areas of Indonesia and Malaysia. More than often not, children receive little or no pay for their efforts. With plantations systematically destroying the rainforest land that the local people depend on, communities are continuously finding themselves with no choice but to become plantation workers. Faced with poor and degrading working conditions, they often earn barely enough income to survive and support their families.
