The fine distinction between DISC and DISK annoys me. This is one - TopicsExpress

The fine distinction between DISC and DISK annoys me. This is one of the few A vs. B issues that stops me in my tracks, causes me to grumble while I call up a dictionary online, and vanishes from my brain the instant Ive spelled the word correctly. Ready? A DISC is optical and reproduces data with lasers. A DISK reproduces data magnetically. So you didnt understand that either? Try this: think of compact and DV DISC but computer hard DISK drive. For medical terms, its now generally DISC (Latin: discus). Im afraid that youre going to have to try to know them both by heart. And in the U.S. we still use disk more; in the U.K. its disc. Sigh.
