The first day of the New Year brought me a surprise. A big one, - TopicsExpress

The first day of the New Year brought me a surprise. A big one, actually. And, its a mysterious one, too. My Dad gave me a Ford Windstar van a few years ago, and now that its 15 years old, mysterious problems are happening. But, thats to be expected. When you drive old cars, its always good to have a spare one. Right after he gave it to me, I noticed the right rear power window would not crack open. Strange thing: I could click it, then I could open it, and it would always close. The left one worked fine though, so no big deal. Then, a couple years later, it started to work fine! Opens, closes, no problem at all. Last year a new problem showed up. The front passenger power window quit working, it was stuck. BUT, stuck in the UP position! If a power window fails, thats the way you want it to fail. Every once in a while, I would use the switch to see if it had magically fixed itself. AND TODAY, IT MAGICALLY FIXED ITSELF! I am quite sure the other things that are wrong with it are not going to fix themselves like those two things did. 1) The power steering is beginning to go out. Im told its not a safety hazard, they make that awful sound for years before they finally totally quit, and even then, you still have manual steering. 2) The paint is going to continue to come off, and if I dont spray paint it with Rust-Oleum once or twice a year, it will get all rusty. So, I need to do a paint job once in a while. Thats kind of fun, actually. 3) Ill have to keep on cleaning out the old and putting new silicone around the windshield. It wasnt replaced well at some point in the past, so every once in a while, theres water falling on the dashboard of the car, or sometimes dribbling down the inside of the windshield. 4) This one is very inconvenient: Getting gasoline in the tank is a job. I have to dribble it in, and it takes a while. Its the charcoal canister ($100 + installation), or maybe a vent line, the mechanic told me that if I want it to be fixed, run all the gas out of the tank, then bring it in. And he has no idea how much thats going to cost, but it was sort of hinted it might be expensive. Deal with it. But, its a drivable and very handy vehicle, and Im happy that all the power windows work. But heres the thing thats odd: I have a van and a convertible. Which one leaks in the rain? The van.
