The first edition and translation from Sanskrit of the Rāmāyaṇa in Europe, 1829, Bonn (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). In Latin, along with the original Sanskrit text in Devanāgarī script, by August Wilhelm von Schlegel (1767-1845), German poet, translator, critic, and a foremost leader of German Romanticism. Schlegel became a professor of literature and Sanskrit at the University of Bonn. He founded a special printing office for Devanāgarī script in order to print books along with the original Sanskrit texts. His Latin translation of the Bhagavadgītā six years earlier, in 1823, was the first printed book in Devanāgarī script in Europe. Image source: archive.org
