The first shape in my Landmark card is taken from a minaret of a mosque in Nouakchott, Mauritania. I learned an interesting thing about how the choice of construction materials can impact community relations. According to the site Architectural Archiving, this particular mosque represents changes in construction, design, and … community … that started in colonial times. [It was built using] cement and rebar. With the exception of severe damage that occurs once or twice in a generation because of an unusual weather event, [this mosque does] not witness local communities coming together to maintain their places of worship.
