The first time I met him, he took me on a tour of his house, where he had all of these amazing photographs framed and hanging on his walls. There were magazine covers, National Geographic covers, photos from all over the world. He took them all. He understood light and shadow, the patience it took to get that one shot; he would stand there for hours to get it. He got it. He talked to me about cameras, about lenses, about how something was lit and why he took that shot. He understood me and I him. He became my hero. I wanted just one shot that hed be proud of me for, not because he was my grandfather and loved me, but because Id captured something that he was impressed by. As he got older, he took me around and showed me those same pictures, every time. I listened to those stories every time, never even thinking of rolling my eyes. I wanted to hear the stories again. He had the most amazing eye Id ever seen. I will truly miss him. He passed away this morning, peacefully. He was 97. He was married to grandma for 68 years. I can only hope to have the life he had.
