The first week in October of 1897, the people of Kansas City and tens of thousands of visitors were looking forward to Karnival Week. The railroads reported every train arriving at Union Depot had additional coaches and many passengers brought enough baggage to stay all week. The festivities opened on Tuesday night with the Priests of Pallas Parade. Pallas Athene rode through the streets of Kansas City at the head of twenty amazing floats, recreating scenes from the Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen, like the Little Mermaid and Thumbelina. Wednesday was the busiest day of gala week. In the morning there was a football game at Exposition Park between Kansas University and the Medics of University Medical College. The Karnival Krewes third annual flower parade was Wednesday afternoon. Flower bedecked floats filled with maids of honor and costumed horsemen escorted Miss Frances Cravens and her Carnation Court. Wednesday night was the Priests of Pallas Annual Ball. Of course, society ladies were not permitted to appear on the dancing floor wearing hats or wraps. Gentleman were required to appear in full dress. For regular folks, a sham battle between companies of the MIssouri National Guard was staged. The Army band brought the regiment onto the grounds at the double-quick. During the fighting, thirty thousand rounds of ammunition was expended by soldiers bravely storming a well defended fort.
