The following 4-panel forecast maps were taken from the 00z/Saturday run of the GFS, NAM, European (ECMWF) and Canadian (GEM) models. These 6-hour 500 millibar height and quanitative precipitation forecasts are for 6 PM MDT on SUN Aug 3, MON Aug 4, TUE Aug 5 and WED Aug 6, 2014. Note the progression of the low pressure center (red L) and its attached shortwave trough axis (dashed red line) progressing northward through the Great Basin, then eastward across the northern and central Rocky Mountain region during this four day period. Much of the precipitation during this period appears to be generated along the shortwave trough (weather disturbance) found up around 18000 feet MSL. Models generally show the bulk of the precipitation in Colorado falling on western and central sections of the state on Sunday and Monday. By Tuesday and Wednesday the bulk of precipitation shifts to areas over and east of the Front Range with the passing shortwave trough.
