The following article by David Graeber is an excellent analysis of technology, visions of the future and their realization, or lack thereof, from a the perspective of a materialist anthropologist. He does a nice job of putting economic trends in an institutional setting and showing how expectations of the future are shaped by historical contexts. Fitting with the general pessimism of the day, Graeber concludes that we do indeed live in dark times. However, Graeber is not a determinist and doesnt believe that history has some end--certainly the end of history is not the Neo-liberal manager/consumer of Fukuyama--Nietzsches last man. It turns out that the best path to transcendence is not repetition, but transcendence. Tip of the hat to my favorite naked website, Naked Capitalism for the link. thebaffler/salvos/of-flying-cars-and-the-declining-rate-of-profit
