The following exchange appears in this week’s edition of HaModia newspaper. “I am occasionally invited to my uncle’s house for Shabbos. Sometimes he has as his guest a friend who was a yeshiva student in his youth, but unfortunately says he does not believe the Torah comes from Hashem. He gets into discussions with me to challenge my emunah with all kinds of philosophical arguments. Should I just ignore him, which may make him think that I accept his arguments, or should I read up on how to respond to these challenges?” In his answer R’ Abraham J. Twersky advised the reader to inform the guest that he is not interested in these discussions. He then goes on to explain the pathology of the formerly orthodox Jew. In his opinion, the real reason anyone leaves orthodox Judaism is because they want to be able to do anything and everything without restrictions. It’s a matter of self-control, not theology. He is blinded by his desires and thus cannot engage in critical thinking.
