The following incident happened at the 5th annual running of the 1971 OCIR Manufactures Race... The 11pm cut off produced the highlight of the night when Mike Jones told the starter to light the last two cars...Lew Arrington in his BRUTUS Mustang & Connie Kallitta @ the helm of his BOUNTY HUNTER Mustang...As they fired,a third car also fired, back in the staging lanes next to the OCIR tower. Gerry Glenn in the Glenn,Schultz &Glenn Charger fired up and pulled in front of Arrington in the right lane...Almost immediately a bunch of drivers began to make motions to tuner Bill Schultz to cut the car off for jumping the staging lanes. Schultz refused to cut the engine in the car, although the starter repeatly indicated to him to do so. Fat Jack Bynum of the Don Schumacher crew and Don himself were among those that demanded he shut the car off. In the meantime Kalitta staged his car and ran as Arrington sat calmly in the bleach box with his motor lit and thundering,he finally hit the kill switch, when his motor got too hot and Glenn kept his motor going...by that time about a half dozen drivers and mechanics were standing in front of the car and Glenn wasnt going anywhere unless he went over them all. Schumacher finally solved the problem by darting behind the car, where he dumped both parchutes out on the ground. That ended it and Glenn hit the fuel shut off. Schultz kept yelling about the fact that they hadnt made a run yet...but his words fell on deaf ears. I always enjoyed this story and i hope you did too...i welcome any comments about this little incident that happened at OCIR Back In The Day...JBW...
