The following is a response to the great article below. I particularly like the sentence that begins the last paragraph. All other wealthy democracies have some form of universal health coverage. And in every instance those systems deliver care at much lower cost than American private insurance--and with better health statistics. Indeed, some American health stats are more Third World than first. But private insurance generates immense profit and Republican governors who so cruelly deny health care to the working poor, people with an entire $1,000/month to splurge, are not concerned with health and humantiy but with money and inhuman ideology. Medicaid expansion should be a no-brainer, but the GOP govs have neither brain nor heart. And most of these governors, to use their own terminology, preside over moocher states. They are eager for every handout to the rich, but as for a low-income child, well, its time to decrease the surplus population. Coldness of heart, narrowness of soul, and smallness of mind have become Republican virtues. The American rich are the wealthiest of any democracy, while the poor are the poorest, the American child poverty rate of 23 per cent far surpassing all but Romania. Do the GOP govs want Transylvanian horror? Refusal to take cash to treat the poor will live in infamy as a nadir of American humanity.
