The following is from Duncan Higgon of the Portland Hotel Society. Its a very powerful read and emphasizes just how incredibly important your show/boot donation will be. Please share, share, share with others in the Vancouver area. __________________ We see clients in the low barrier shelter setting that have worn the same shoes for years and are in varying states of disrepair; holes worn all the way through or by the nature of our climate almost permanently damp or even mouldy. The effects on individuals go far beyond mere discomfort we see all sorts of untreated foot related conditions amongst our clientele base from perpetual fungal infections to the very serious immersion foot syndromes, such as “trench foot”, or in the extreme the onset of gangrene. While we have health professionals treating the varying conditions one of the root causes for chronic foot issues and more pressingly over all health is inadequate and inappropriate footwear. Beyond the immediate health concerns surrounding footwear the homeless are no different than anyone else in that new shoes, or just new to them, helps to build self-esteem and self-worth - Two qualities that are desperately lacking in much of the target population.
