The following is information I gathered based on a video created by youtube account ( Enterthe5t4rz) concerning the connections between a 19th century TEXAS flag and the flag of Liberia. This odd selection of a Texas flag was noticed hanging in the barn of character Cade Yeager in the newest Transformers movie. There has been some debate as to what the flag is. Some people thought it was an off skewed color and represented the Flag of Liberia. But in fact it is one of the first flags of Texas. So I got a history lesson that was pretty cool so I thought I would share. The Long Expedition was an 1819 attempt to take control of Spanish Texas by filibuster. It was led by James Long and successfully established a small independent government, known as the Republic of Texas (distinct from the later Republic of Texas created by the Texas Revolution). The expedition crumbled later in the year, as Spanish troops drove the invaders out. Long returned to Texas in 1820 and attempted to reestablish his control. Some interesting history tying this all to Liberia... In trying to find some reason why these two flags are so similar I stumbled across the topic of Colonization and the founding of Liberia. It seems that in the early part of the 19th century, a variety of organizations were established that advocated relocation of black people from the United States to places where they would enjoy greater freedom; some endorsed colonization, while others advocated emigration. During the 1820s and 1830s the American Colonization Society (A.C.S.) was the primary vehicle for proposals to return black Americans to freedom in Africa, regardless of whether they were native-born in the United States. It had broad support nationwide among white people, including prominent leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Henry Clay and James Monroe, who considered this preferable to emancipation. While I dont believe for one second that the US wanted to Free the slaves to live in Liberia, more likely they wanted to transport already enslaved people to become slaves in the diamond mines in Liberia. In the 1800s diamonds are known to have been harvested include: Angola, Liberia, The Republic of the Congo, The Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Congo is where they claim that Ebola came from. Defining the Flag of Liberia, The white star represents the freedom the ex-slaves were given, above the blue square representing the African mainland. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Expedition
