The following is the summary of the explanation given by an eyewitness of the shooting case which killed a girl of 8 years old. The explanation was delivered by him through phone-in during a radio program called ‘Dunia Hari Ini’ via the Media Selatan, one of the community radios in Patani broadcast on 16 May 2014. The incident happened on 14 May in a village called Long Khuan, Khuha Sub-district (tambon), Sabaoyoi District, Songkhla Province, one of the so-called red-zones. On that night, the eyewitness, together with 5 of his friends, were sitting in front of a two-story house in the village. The owner of the house, Sarophee Cheni was on the second floor, and his daughter, Soraya, 8 years old, was watching television inside the house. At about 9.45 p.m., there was a pick-up track passing through the house, and all 6 men heard sound of shooting three times. As there was no damage caused by the shootings, those who sat in front of the house thought that those who on the pick-up track shot their guns into the air. About ten minutes later, the owner of the house, who was at upstairs came down to set a mosquito net for his daughter, only to find her in a pool of blood. Only her fingers slightly moved. No one had heard any cry or scream from here. The father immediately asked his friends for help, and brought her to the Sabayoi Hospital. The injure was too serious to be cared at a local hospital, so the doctors there decided to send her to a big hospital in Hat Yai, but she passed away during the journey. The village head, who was in a different place, heard a voice from his walkie-talkie saying that “Sorry for the shooting a while ago. Got drunk” in Thai. Those who were with the head also heard the voice too. According to the witness, two or three years ago, the house was once surrounded by the soldiers to be searched for the suspicion that it had been used by the insurgents as a hiding place. But they found nothing suspicious from the search. #SaveChildrenOfPatani #GENAP
