The following is trans-scripted from this past weeks Elementary ... Sherlock Holmes giving an explanation of his behavior to Watson (*I saw a lot of Myself in this* ) : HOLMES : Ive given consideration to your rebuke with regard to my capacity to being Polite. WATSON : I didnt mean it as a rebuke. I was just trying to have a conversation. HOLMES : Either way. You have a point. There is unquestionably a certain social utility to being polite... To maintain an awareness to other peoples sensitivities - to exhibit all the traits that might commonly be grouped under the heading : Nice. WATSON : I think youll be surprised how easy it is to earn that distinction. HOLMES : NO... I am not... a nice man. Its important that you understand that. Its going to save us a great deal of time and effort... There is not a Warmer - Kinder ME waiting to be coaxed out into the light. I.. am.. acerbic. I can be cruel. Its who I am.. right at the bottom. I am neither proud of this - or ashamed of it... It simply IS. And in my line of work my nature has been an advantage far more than it has been a hinderance. Im not going to change. WATSON : you have. Youre not the same person I met a year and a half ago. HOLMES : Oh Ive been good to You... yes ..for the most part. I consider you... exceptional. So I make an exceptional effort to accommodate you... but you must accept that for as long as you are in my life - there will occasionally be fall-outs from my behavior. That must be part of our understanding. WATSON : No one can accept that forever. HOLMES: To thine own Self.. Watson.
