The following letter to the editor by Rex Davis has been submitted to the Daily Jeffersonian. According to the author they have refused to print it. I do not personally know Mr Davis, and this letter is his viewpoints and not mine. I am sharing this letter because the so-called news media in Guernsey County will not. As the author of the letter did not identify the county agency involved, I will not either. The setting is this: A car fire was reported to 911. They dispatched the old Washington volunteer fire department because it is within their jurisdiction. The old Washington volunteer fire department requested by radio that Cambridge FD also be dispatched as they were closer . No one knows why but Cambridge FD did not receive a request to provide assistance. What happens next is the subject of this letter by Mr. Davis. The department head of said county agency yet to be identified arrived on scene. This supervisor attacked verbally the fire personnel from old Washington. His statements were not only appalling but incorrect . What truly made the situation even worse is when the sheriffs department employee, a supervisor none the less, arrived on scene and threatened to give the firefighter a free ride to town. I would have accepted that challenge and in the courtroom someone would have become unemployed. That someone would have lost their job, and their pension for abusing their badge. This is yet another example of what we are fighting against in Guernsey County . Its time people realize there are some in positions of power who would make this county a police state. Is that what you want? The same people ask us to work with them , when what they really want is to exercise their power. It is a shame that the connections of our local media and our local leaders is so tight that they refused to print this residents observation. Take it from here Mr. Davis: What kind of community do we live in? Well, I’ll tell you and I am appalled. On Wednesday, July 24th, I was at a Government Agency on Route 40 when a car in the parking lot caught fire. After the Old Washington VOLUNTEER fire dept arrived, the firefighter was ridiculed!!! I could not believe what I was hearing: 1. This brave person left his PAYING job to put his life at risk for his community. 2. He was told he took too long to get to the site. Nevermind the fact that Route 40 between his work & the fire dept is down to one lane for repairs. 3. He arrived ALONE, not knowing what to expect once he arrived. 4. He put the fire out very quickly, of which I have a video tape on my phone, should this newspaper desire to watch. This is totally unacceptable behavior!! This VOLUNTEER (and, as you can tell, I am stressing the VOLUNTEER part) puts his life on the line each & every time he responds to a call. He gets no pay for doing this. He has no control over where the 911 call gets routed to. He just RESPONDS, saving lives when needed, comforting when needed, just doing this out of the goodness of his heart to help his community. I, for one, am thankful for the Old Washington Volunteer Fire Dept. and believe they deserve the respect & gratitude of each & everyone in the community, never to be ridiculed. SHAME ON YOU!!!!! And I believe you know who you are! Sincerely, Rex Davis
