The following statement is attributable to the Ghafoorzai family on the occasion of the 3rd Anniversary of the Martyrdom of the late Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani. September 20, 2014 marks the 3rd year anniversary of the martyrdom of the late Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani, former President of the Islamic State of Afghanistan, and Chairman of the High Peace Council (HPC). The late Professor Rabbani was a renowned scholar and prominent political figure who stood in defense of Afghanistan’s sovereignty, and territorial integrity during two critical phases in Afghanistan’s modern history, namely the Jihad against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, and the resistance against the Taliban. Later, following the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001, Prof. Rabbani played a key role in the start of a new and democratic era in Afghanistan by graciously transferring power to President Hamid Karzai. This marked the first peaceful transfer of power in Afghanistan’s history, and laid the foundation for the democratization of Afghanistan. As Chairman of the High Peace Council, Prof. Rabbani dedicated himself to the restoration of lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan, engaging in a robust effort in encouraging the armed opposition to give up violence, and to embrace the path of peace. Prof. Rabbani spent his entire life valiantly serving the Afghan nation, and made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of a peaceful and prosperous future. With his loss Afghanistan lost one of its most valiant figures, who stood in defense of his country during the most trying junctures of Afghanistan’s history. May the Al-Mighty Allah bestow eternal peace on his soul.
