The following story is super-duper inspirational! If you think its time to give up the fight or perhaps youre thinking you may not be good enough to survive, then I suggest you read it! (For anyone who is not familiar with USMLE- its the united states medical licensing exam. As an international medical student/graduate, were told from day 1 that the step 1 exam is THE EXAM, its the make it or break it exam, so dont dare fail (or JUST pass) because if you do, you might as well pack your bags and go home cause you wont stand a chance to survive in a competitive field like medicine- super encouraging ehh!....NOT!) Reading about this mans courage to keep going despite facing failure after failure, made me think about how Ive always been afraid of failure. That is perhaps why Ive always played it safe, always walked on the side walk, never wanting to end up at a place where I did not know what I would face ahead. I always looked for paths that had footprints left behind, only to realize my shoe size was too big to fit ;) But thats all in the past! Choosing to move to the Caribbean for medical school was the first and by far the most daring thing Ive done to date. (Might not be such a daring thing for some, but for me it was). Its a path less travelled, a path where there arent too many footprints to follow. Hence, Im learning to take chances! A whole lot of chances! Learning from others mistakes and mine! If there is anything Ive learned in my 24 years of life is that....life, indeed, is way too short! Embrace both, success and failure, but never let either of them get to you....because neither of them will last forever...its what you learn from them that lasts forever ;) Its a long journey, and its only just begun...filled with fear, Im standing in front of the first obstacle, the biggest obstacle, the one they say will define my future...but I know inshAllah I will make it to the other side and so will everyone else who stays persistent.....because at the end of the day its about how badly do you want it? This post is a little too personal for a something like Facebook, but thought Id share my thoughts anyway :) Thanks Dr. John Barone for all the encouragement, motivation, tatooing and for always having our back ;)
