The following true human interest story is probably one of my finest. Originally in 2 parts, I edited it into one long story. Please enjoy. Ever word and every action is from my heart:: BLANCA FROM MEXICO In the summer of 1966, at about 10:00 PM, I was dispatched to a two family home on Liberty Street. It was a time when I was working closely in the Hispanic Community, learning the culture and language. The call was a report of an attempted rape of an 18 year old Mexican girl. I was nowhere close to speaking Spanish fluently so with the assistance of an interpreter, I put the following story together. The girl Blanca from Acuna, Mexico was living with a middle age Mexican business couple. An agreement was made that Blanca would be their domestic helper, to cook and clean for them as they worked during the day for room and board plus $25.00 a week spending money. The couple also paid for her plane ticket to come to America and after one year, Blanca would be free and on her own. Four months had passed but tonight, the man decided to attack Blanca as his wife was away for a few days. She ran to a neighbor’s house and they called the police. Thats when I got involved. Blanca was not injured but she was frightened and alone. All of her personal belongings including her clothes were still in that house. She only had the clothes she was wearing. I went next door and knocked on the door. The man opened the door. I told him that Blanca was not coming back, ever but she needed her clothes and other personal items. He said un momento and closed the door. 10 minutes later he opened the door and handed me a large pile of ladies clothes and closed the door. What I then realized was he cut all of Blanca’s clothes into pieces. My sergeant was on scene and he said, it is now a civil matter Bob so dont get involved. However. Later that night I arrested this b**stard for attempted rape. Blanca had nothing. Just the clothes on her back. I found a safe place for her to stay and the next morning, I took her to Alexanders in Milford and let her put $100.00 on my credit card so she would at least have clean clothes to wear. She really stretched that $100.00. When I told this whole story to Mary, she was not happy. Absolutely not jealous but she said you stuck your neck out for young girl and God knows how it could of ended. She gave me the old familiar lecture of “Bob, you cant change the whole world, but if anything happened to Blanca, I would never forgive myself. Since that traumatic night on Liberty Street for Blanca, I found her a safe home with my friends Phyllis Berrios and her Cuban husband,Wilfredo. Phyllis was the daughter of Pepe and Anna Berrios who operated a fine Spanish Restaurant on State Street just north of Elm Street. It was called, La Mina De Oro. (The Gold Mine). Phyllis and her husband owned a dry cleaning business on Grand Avenue near James Street. Blanca took care of their home while they worked. Blanca was now safe and happy. Blanca met a handsome 21 year old man named Lee. Lee was from Puerto Rico. They found an apartment in New Haven and moved in together. Blanca was no longer a frightened and vulnerable woman, living in a strange city, thousands of miles from home. Blanca now had friends and a relatively normal life... About 6 months later Lee became home sick for Puerto Rico so Lee and Blanca moved to Puerto Rico. On their last day here, I paid them a visit to say, Adios y buenas suerta. Good bye and good luck. Blanca bought me a record (disco) as a reminder of our mutual friendship and trust. It was called, Yo Te Amo. It was by a popular Singer at that time named Yaco Monte. The song could be heard on Utube. The kindness you show to a person today could mean a lifetime friendship.
