The founder of the Kerrville Folk Festival passed today. Kerrville is Mecca for a songwriter like me. I got to meet Rod Kennedy last year, on my terms, as a New Folk Finalist. I told myself last year that this was the last time I was going to enter the contest. If I didnt make it now, I would get to Kerrville eventually. But the fates were good to me and last year I went as part of the New Folk Class of 2013. When we gathered to meet Rod, you could have heard a pin drop. He talked to us and looked us each in the eye, sizing us up. We went around the circle introducing ourselves and he asked a bit about each one of us. After I told him my name, I started crying as I told him what his folk festival has meant to me for so many years. This festival was my goal. This festival that valued the song, above everything. This was my tribe and I thanked him for all he had done for the songwriters and for welcoming me home. Godspeed Rod Kennedy. Thanks for your hard work. singout.org/2014/04/14/kerrville-folk-festival-founder-rod-kennedy-dies/
